US Vice President Mike Pence has walked out of an American football game after some players knelt during the national anthem. Mr Pence tweeted he had left because he “will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag and our national anthem”. More than a dozen players from the San Francisco 49ers had knelt for the anthem, while members of Mr Pence’s home team, the Indianapolis Colts, linked arms in solidarity. In the NFL, some players are choosing to kneel, rather than stand, when The Star-Spangled Banner is played before games as a form of demonstration at police…

Theresa May will call for the European Union to be flexible in its approach and will promise the UK can get a deal that will prove the anti-Brexit “doomsayers” wrong. It comes as the fifth round of Brexit talks between UK and EU negotiators are due to start today. Mrs May will say: “By approaching these negotiations in a constructive way – in a spirit of friendship and co-operation and with our sights firmly set on…
LAS VEGAS – When a gunman slaughtered 59 people and wounded more than 500 others Sunday night, Lynette Martinez was right there in the middle. And she tells CBN News her life will never be the same after surviving the deadliest shooting attack in U.S. history. “It was just gun shots and gun shots and gun shots, and a guy fell behind me, and he was covered in blood. My boots were covered in blood,” she recalled. Martinez thought she was hearing fireworks, but when country music singer Jason Aldean ran off stage, she ran for her life. “I am…
Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has reportedly written to every pilot who works for the airline offering them better pay to stay. The letter comes after a pilot rota crisis forced the airline to cancel thousands of flights. In the letter Mr O’Leary is said to have asked pilots not to abandon the company and offered them incentives to stay. He reportedly promised pay rises, a “productivity/loyalty bonus” and “significant improvements” to contracts and career progression. The promises follow a tumultuous month for the carrier in which it was forced to cancel tens of thousands of flights twice. The cancellations have disrupted the…
At least 16 people were killed when a train hit a bus that had broken down on a railway crossing east of Moscow, authorities said. The victims were all on board the bus at the time of the collision in the Vladimir region, Russian authorities said. No train passengers were injured. “The bus stalled on the track,” Vladimir Myagkov, a spokesman for Russian Railways, told Rossiya 24. “Some people say the passengers tried to push the bus off the track. At that moment the train approached and a collision occurred.” The collision happened at 3.29am local time near the city…
Low-price beach holiday offers helped Easyjet attract record passenger numbers for the summer but it warned of more turbulence ahead as it battles rivals in the cut-throat aviation market. The budget carrier said it was on course to post headline annual profits of £405-£410m, at the upper end of its previous guidance though lower than last year’s £495m. Chief executive Carolyn McCall said conditions remained “challenging” and it expected more pressure on yields – a key measure of airlines’ financial performance – as it battles rivals. The airline’s fourth quarter trading update also revealed a £100m hit to profits for…
England have qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia following a 1-0 win over Slovenia at Wembley. Captain Harry Kane’s stoppage time winner helped transform the Three Lions’ fortunes after a frustrating night. England only needed a draw to qualify from Group F, but Tottenham star Kane diverted home Kyle Walker’s cross to give manager Gareth Southgate his seventh win of the qualifying campaign. But the performance will have given Southgate much to ponder, with England limping to victory and largely unimpressive against a team ranked 55th in the world. After a poor first half, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling…
There is some hope for Uber users in London that a decision to strip the ride-hailing app of its operating licence could be overturned. Talks in the capital between the company’s new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi and transport commissioner Mike Brown were described by both sides as “constructive”. Uber has pledged to “make things right” since its operating licence renewal was rejected last month on the grounds of “public safety and security implications”. The firm’s approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers were cited among the concerns. Its 40,000 drivers are only able to continue serving customers because…
Tesco boss Dave Lewis has hailed “strong progress” as it reported a sharp rise in first-half profits to £562m and resumed dividend payments in the latest sign of its turnaround. Britain’s biggest supermarket said it had been able to hold back the scale of price increases compared to its rivals in the face of inflationary pressure in a “challenging” market. Interim results for the six months to 26 August also however showed UK sales growth stuttering, as it slipped back to 2.1% in the second quarter compared to 2.3% in the previous three months. Shares in the FTSE 100 giant…
The Las Vegas gunman set up cameras inside and outside his hotel room before firing for at least nine minutes at a concert crowd below. Police spoke of how Stephen Paddock carefully planned his actions before he opened fire on concertgoers at a “progressively rapid rate” through windows on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. He placed one camera in a food service cart in the corridor, while a second camera was placed outside his room and a third in the peep hole of his two-room suite, officials said. Investigators who searched his room also found…
