FBI director James Comey has confirmed an investigation into Russian hacking is also exploring whether there was coordination between Donald Trump’s campaign and the Kremlin. The bombshell was an unusual move given the FBI does not usually comment on ongoing investigations. “But in unusual circumstances, where it is in the public interest,” Mr Comey said, “it may be appropriate to do so.” Mr Comey also dismissed the president’s claims that Barack Obama ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower. Both he and NSA director Admiral Mike Rogers emphatically rejected claims GCHQ had carried out the surveillance on behalf of the Obama…
Theresa May has vowed to “negotiate hard” as Downing Street announced Article 50 would be triggered on 29 March. The official notification will be sent to European Council President Donald Tusk next Wednesday, starting the formal process of leaving the EU. The move will pave the way for two years of negotiations, with the country expected to be out of the bloc by the end of March 2019. Speaking during a visit to Swansea, Mrs May said: “I am very clear that I want to ensure we get the best possible deal for the United Kingdom.” The PM promised to…
The European boss of Google has apologised for online adverts appearing next to extremist material after M&S became the latest big company to pull ads from the internet giant. Matt Brittin, head of the company for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “We are sorry to anybody that’s been affected.” He made the comments at an industry conference after a number of well-known UK brands suspended advertising over concerns centred on content appearing on Google’s YouTube platform. M&S said: “In order to ensure brand safety, we are pausing activity across Google platforms whilst the matter is worked through.” The…
Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League on away goals after a 3-1 defeat (6-6 on aggregate) to Monaco in their last-16 second leg on Wednesday. A desperate first-half display at the Stade Louis II saw the visitors squander their two-goal first-leg advantage earned from a 5-3 win at the Etihad two weeks ago. Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho gave the hosts a deserved 2-0 lead as City struggled to cope with Monaco’s attacking brilliance. Pep Guardiola’s side improved markedly after the break and looked to be heading into the last eight after Leroy Sane’s 71st-minute strike put them 5-6…
Donald Trump’s revised travel ban has been blocked by a federal judge hours before it was due to take effect across the US. Hawaii District Judge Derrick Watson ruled there was a strong likelihood that “irreparable injury is likely if the requested relief is not issued”. He also pointed to “questionable evidence supporting the government’s national security motivation”. His ruling prevents the President’s executive order restricting travel to the US from Muslim-majority countries from going into effect today. Mr Trump immediately hit out against the decision, claiming it was “flawed” and an example of “unprecedented judicial overreach”. He said the…
Consumers have spent a total of £7bn more than they should have on energy over the last three years, a supplier has claimed. First Utility said remaining on more expensive tariffs with one of the Big Six companies has led to households losing an average of £800 each. The firm compared how much people on the energy giants’ standard variable tariffs would have spent over the period with how much they could have spent if they had switched to a cheaper supplier and tariff plan. First said it used information from switching site Energy Helpline and a report by the…
The Queen is expected to give Royal Assent to the Brexit bill in the next few hours, paving the way for Theresa May to trigger Article 50. Officially known as the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill, it passed the Parliamentary process following votes in the Commons and Lords on Monday. When it becomes law, the Prime Minister is free to decide when to invoke the two-year negotiation period for Britain to leave the EU. Downing Street has suggested this is not likely until the last week of March. Royal Assent nowadays is generally declared to both Houses by their…

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored on his return from injury as Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Rostov in their Europa League last-16 first-leg tie. The Armenia international had spent another spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, but started the game in Russia which went ahead despite concerns from Manchester United about the state of the pitch. Mkhitaryan opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a cutback from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but United were pegged back by their hosts eight minutes after the break as Aleksandr Bukharov’s effort beat Sergio Romero. Chances were mostly at a premium…
Tesco says 140,000 workers are to be compensated after a payroll blunder meant they were paid below the National Living Wage. The supermarket chain said the issue affected both current and former colleagues, with the majority due up to £40 each and some receiving more. Tesco said the mistake, spotted during an internal review, would cost it £9.7m to rectify. Its statement said: “The review, which was conducted during the implementation of a new payroll system, found the voluntary contributions made by some colleagues to benefits such as pensions, childcare vouchers and cycle to work schemes, led to errors that…
