For months, Silicon Valley seemed to be heeding the advice of one of its most powerful figures, billionaire investor Peter Thiel, who said President Trump should be taken “seriously, but not literally”. But at the international arrivals gate at San Francisco airport at the weekend, things were getting very literal, very quickly. What the tech industry had feared might happen, was happening. The impact of President Trump’s immigration ban on tech companies has been immediate. And one by one, the major firms and personalities in this part of the world spoke out with a fervour some felt was long overdue.…

Liverpool striker Divock Origi insists his confidence has not been affected by his recent barren spell in front of goal. The Belgium international enjoyed the best spell of his career in late November and early December as he scored in five consecutive games. However, since netting against Sunderland, Leeds, Bournemouth, West Ham and Middlesbrough, he has gone nine games without a goal. He told Liverpool’s website: “As a striker you always want to score but the most important thing is to keep doing your thing, keep focused, keep playing your game. “If the qualities are there and the instinct is…
The government must enforce the law properly to ban sexist dress rules at work that discriminate against women, say MPs. The demand has come from two parliamentary committees, for Petitions and for Women and Equalities. Their report follows the experience of London receptionist Nicola Thorp, who was sent home from work last May for not wearing high heels. Her parliamentary petition on the issue gained more than 150,000 signatures. The joint report of the two committees, entitled High Heels and Workplace Dress Codes, found that the Equality Act 2010 should ban discriminatory dress rules at work, but in practice the…
Theresa May is to be challenged by MPs to reveal more about the Government’s Brexit plans after her Supreme Court defeat on Article 50. In what could be a testing Prime Minister’s Questions, she will be challenged on the legislation the Government has now been forced to introduce. She will also face potentially embarrassing questions from MPs on the Trident test cover-up row and her meeting with new US President Donald Trump later this week. But the Article 50 legislation will dominate PMQs and Parliamentary business for the next two months, because MPs are planning to table dozens of amendments.…
Donald Trump is set to launch his immigration crackdown with an order enabling construction of his Mexican border wall. The President is expected to sign several executive orders on Wednesday addressing one of his central campaign messages – that illegal immigration to the US is out of control and threatening the country’s security. As well as taking the first steps towards building what may eventually be a 2,000-mile barrier stretching across the southern US, Mr Trump is also expected to target so-called ‘sanctuary cities’, where local officials refuse to hand over illegal immigrants for deportation. He is expected to sign…

A suspected unexploded World War Two bomb found in the River Thames has been recovered for safe disposal. The operation by the Royal Navy and Metropolitan Police forced Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Victoria Embankment in central London to shut. The Port of London Authority said the suspected bomb measured “2ft by 1ft” (60cm x 30cm). The device has been referred to as an “ordnance” which in armed…
The search for a company to take on the £2.75bn contract to build high speed trains for the HS2 rail network got underway on Friday. The Department for Transport said up to 60 trains, capable of speeds of about 225mph, were needed. The contract, which will also involve maintaining the fleet, will be awarded in 2019. The trains are for the first phase of the project, due to open in 2026 and run between London and Birmingham. Construction will begin later this year and it is expected to reduce rail times between Birmingham and London by 32 minutes. A second…
