Thousands of UK holidaymakers are set to be flown home from The Gambia due to growing political unrest. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is warning against “all non-essential travel” to the west African nation due to potential military intervention following presidential elections on 1 December. With fears the main international airport could be shut at short notice, holiday company Thomas Cook will lay on additional flights from the capital Banjul today to bring 985 package trip customers home. Thomas Cook said a flight scheduled from Manchester will leave the UK without passengers and bring the first group of tourists home.…
Other countries are “queuing up” to sign trade deals with the UK once it leaves the EU, Boris Johnson has said. The foreign secretary also said the UK would not be “hauling up the drawbridge” despite new migration controls promised by Theresa May. Mrs May set out her Brexit strategy – which includes pulling out of the EU single market – in a speech on Tuesday. She also warned the EU not to try to “punish” the UK, saying she would walk away unless the right deal was offered. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Johnson said: “We will no…
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has turned down a £430,000-a-week offer from China. Toure, 33, was the subject of interest from the Chinese Super League last summer. He decided against moving then and gave the same response when he was contacted again to say the offer remained open during the current transfer window, which closes on 31 January. The Ivorian’s contract at the Etihad expires in the summer. Toure’s future appeared in doubt when he was left out of the City squad by Pep Guardiola at the start of the season. However, he has been a regular for the club…
Mobile operator EE has been fined £2.7m by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, for overcharging tens of thousands of customers. The watchdog found that the UK’s biggest mobile network broke a billing rule on two occasions. Users who called its 150 customer services number while roaming within the EU were incorrectly charged as if they had called the US. That meant customers were charged £1.20 a minute, rather than 19p. As a result, more than 32,145 customers were overcharged a total of £245,000. ‘Catalogue of errors’ Despite calls or texts to the 150 number from within the EU becoming free from…
The pound has hit its lowest level for more than three months on reports Britain was set to quit the EU single market as part of its Brexit plans. Sterling fell below the $1.20 level before recovering slightly on Monday. The pound also dropped to a two-month low against the euro, falling more than 1% to about €1.13 in Asian trading. Analysts said traders were reacting to reports that UK Prime Minister Theresa May would use a speech on Tuesday to signal a so-called “hard Brexit”. Reports have suggested she will signal pulling out of the EU single market and…
The UK is “doing great” following its vote to leave the EU, US President-elect Donald Trump has said. In his first UK interview – with former Justice Secretary Michael Gove for the Times – Mr Trump said he thought the UK was “so smart in getting out”. Mr Trump promised a quick trade deal between the US and the UK after he takes office on Friday. He also criticised “obsolete” Nato and German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s immigration policies. Mr Gove – who was a prominent Leave campaigner during last year’s referendum – asked Mr Trump whether the UK was “at…

Jose Mourinho believes Marcus Rashford could one day surpass the Manchester United scoring feats of Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney. Saturday saw the spotlight fall on United greats past and present as Rooney netted his 249th goal for the club in the FA Cup match against Reading, equalling the record set by the legendary Charlton, who was watching from the main stand. Mourinho believes it will be tough to get near the record mark in the modern era but has seen enough in 19-year-old Rashford to think he could go close. “I don’t know the distances, really, but I…
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has met senior members of President-elect Donald Trump’s team during a trip to New York. Mr Johnson met Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and his chief strategist Steve Bannon. He will also meet key Republican figures in Washington DC, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and senators Bob Corker and Mitch McConnell. The subject of the talks has not been publicly revealed but the Foreign Office said the visit followed a successful meeting last month between the Prime Minister Theresa May’s chiefs of staff and Mr Trump’s team. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The discussions will be focused…
The value of the pound has fallen to a two-month low against major currencies after Prime Minister Theresa May signalled the UK would pursue a so-called “hard Brexit” from the EU. Sterling fell about 1% across the board. The only currency against which it gained ground was the Turkish lira. The Prime Minister told Sky News on Sunday that she wanted the best possible deal for leaving the EU. However, she dismissed the idea that the UK could “keep bits of membership”. She added: “We’re leaving. We’re coming out. We’re not going to be a member of the EU any…
