A health warning has been issued for the elderly and ailing as temperatures plummet and freezing fog disrupts travel across the country. Public Health England (PHE) has issued its first “level three” cold weather alert since January. Road travellers face the dual problem of fog and frost – a day after a motorist was killed in a major crash following foggy conditions on the A40. Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said visibility could be limited to 100m or less in some parts on Thursday morning. The Met Office has issued yellow “be aware” fog warnings across the bulk of England and…

Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry and Mason Holgate have signed new contracts with Everton. Boss Ronald Koeman was keen to get Barry and Baines, two of his ‘leaders on the dressing room and the pitch’, signed up and secure the future of one of the club’s best defensive prospects. Barry, who has played more than 600 Premier League games, has signed an extension to the end of next season, while Baines’ new deal runs out in 2019 and Holgate is committed to Everton until the summer of 2021. “He is a key player for the team. Of course, sometimes you need to…
Theresa May has told European Union leaders that she wants to reach an agreement on the status of Britons living in the EU early on in Brexit negotiations – as well as the status of European citizens currently based in the UK. Following a European Council meeting, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny told reporters it was one of two specific issues raised during a “very short update” provided by Mrs May in Brussels. He added that his British counterpart had also expressed confidence about the recent Supreme Court case appealing a High Court judgment that she could not trigger Article 50,…
Drugs firm Actavis UK overcharged the NHS by hiking the price of a life-saving drug by more than 12,000%, the competition watchdog alleges. It said the amount charged for 10mg hydrocortisone tablets rose to £88 per pack by March 2016 from 70p when a branded version of the drug was sold by a different company prior to April 2008. There was also a 9,500% increase for 20mg tablets, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said. The watchdog claimed that Actavis – formerly known as Auden McKenzie – broke competition law by charging “excessive and unfair prices”. Teva, the Israeli-based company that…
The UK will provide another £20m of aid for Syria, as the Prime Minister condemned Bashar al Assad and his Russian and Iranian backers. Theresa May said the Syrian government must let the United Nations ensure the safe evacuation of civilians from Aleppo. President Assad has claimed victory in the city, which had been held by rebel fighters for more than four years. Speaking as she left the European Council summit in Brussels, Mrs May said the UK would provide extra funding for the most vulnerable people in Syria. The PM said: “We have discussed a number of issues here today…

Royal Bank of Scotland has reached a deal with three of the five shareholder groups who allege they were misled over the bank’s £12bn fund raising in 2008. RBS said it had reached a “full and final settlement” with the three, and would now seek to agree terms with the two remaining groups. Investors argued they were misled over RBS’s health, and so bought shares just months before it was bailed out. RBS has set aside a total of £800m to settle all the claims. RBS – which is still 73%-owned by the government following its 2008 bailout – said…
After a bruising defeat in the High Court, the Government will argue Article 50 can be triggered without an MPs vote. The Government will take its battle to start the process of leaving the EU to the Supreme Court today, in what is seen as one of the most significant constitutional battles in decades. Attorney General Jeremy Wright QC will argue that Theresa May can trigger Article 50 using so-called prerogative powers – meaning MPs do not have to vote on the matter in Parliament. The Government is appealing against an earlier decision by the High Court which ruled in…
Italian PM Matteo Renzi has said he will resign after losing a key referendum on constitutional reform. Mr Renzi had staked his future on a “Yes” vote, vowing to quit if voters rejected his plans – which opponents denounced as dangerous for democracy – to reduce the role of the country’s Senate and take back powers from regional authorities. The result plunges the country into political turmoil, with the effects likely to be felt on the markets and across the rest of Europe. “The experience of my government ends here,” Mr Renzi said in a televised address to the nation. Mr…
