BADENOCH BACKS NURSES IN GENDER ROW – Tory leader warns nurses face punishment over gender views without urgent reform
Kemi Badenoch has warned that more healthcare workers could face disciplinary action over their views on gender, unless urgent changes are made.
The Conservative leader met nurse Jennifer Melle and others in Parliament, describing their treatment by the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a “state-sponsored witch-hunt.”
Melle was investigated after allegedly misgendering a transgender patient and was later suspended for ten months, while several other nurses remain under investigation for speaking publicly.
Supporters, including the Christian Legal Centre, say the case highlights growing pressure on staff to adopt specific language around gender identity.
The government says it supports single-sex spaces based on biological sex and expects NHS organisations to follow legal guidance.
The row adds to wider tensions over gender policy in the workplace, with calls for clearer national rules to protect both staff and patients.
