CEUTA BORDER DEATH TOLL HITS 100 – Mayor says at least 100 people died following mass migrant rush at Spain’s border enclave
At least 100 people died during the massive border rush last week in Spain’s Ceuta, the enclave city’s leader Juan Jesus Vivas said on Thursday (August 6) during an EU parliamentary meeting.
Of the roughly 72,000 migrants who entered Ceuta last week, between 3,000 and 5,000 were still in the Spanish enclave, Vivas said. He added that reception centres for adult and minor migrants were “overwhelmed” and “reached a state of collapse”, causing a “humanitarian emergency of enormous proportions.”
EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brenner told EU lawmakers that what happened in Ceuta “shook the politics of an entire continent”.
He added that European internal border checks should the “last resort measures” to apply “only where necessary and where it’s proportionate.”
