STREETING FACES DONATION QUESTIONS – Defence Secretary linked to contributions tied to alleged ‘Crypto King’ fraudster
Britain’s Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, is facing scrutiny after political donations linked to an alleged “Crypto King” fraudster were revealed.
The donations were reportedly channelled through individuals connected to the businessman, who is accused of running a large-scale cryptocurrency investment fraud. The allegations have renewed questions over political fundraising and donor vetting. Mr Streeting, who is now the Defence Secretary, accepted £37,500 in donations from Labour for the Long Term (LLT) over 2022 and 2023 despite significant concerns among some senior figures in the party over the source of the funds.
Just one month before LLT made its first donation, its founder, David Lawrence, had accepted a £500,000 gift from Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced American cryptocurrency billionaire, who was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in jail for fraud after stealing billions of dollars from his customers.
Mr Streeting has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and there is no suggestion he knew of any alleged criminal activity connected to the funds at the time the donations were received.
Opposition politicians have called for greater transparency over political donations, arguing that parties must strengthen checks on the origins of campaign funding.
The controversy has added to wider debate over political finance in the UK, with renewed calls for tighter rules governing donations and enhanced scrutiny of high-value contributors. {JC}
