CHINA OPEN TENNIS – Gauff survives 3-set marathon, Paolini and Anisimova advance

It took defending champion Coco Gauff two hours and 45 minutes to advance to the next round of the China Open, beating Leylah Fernandez 6-4 4-6 7-5.

In a game littered with long rallies Gauff came out on top despite a wobble in the second set.

World number six Jasmine Paolini beat Sofia Kenin at the fifth time of asking, and this time, in straight sets. She cruised through the first set winning the first three games and then didn’t drop a game in the second to win 6-3, 6-0.

Amanda Anisimova, fresh from knocking out Britain’s Katie Boulter, had to dig deep to win her first set against local favourite Zhang Shuai. The set took over an hour and Anisimova had to face set point three times before winning the tiebreaker 12-10. The second set was much more straight forward as she closed out the match 7-6(10), 6-0 and the American advances to the round of 16 where she will face Karolina Muchova.
