DENMARK SEEKS SOCIAL MEDIA BAN UNDER 15 – PM says platforms are a “monster” harming youth mental health

Denmark’s Prime Minister has proposed a nationwide ban on social media use for children under the age of 15.

The plan, unveiled in Copenhagen, is framed as a response to growing concerns about mental health, online addiction and exposure to harmful content. The Prime Minister described social platforms as a “monster” that society had unleashed without proper safeguards.

Under the proposal, tech companies would be required to block access for underage users, raising questions about feasibility and enforcement.

Critics argue that restrictions of this kind could clash with free expression and push teenagers toward unregulated platforms. Supporters counter that urgent health risks to children demand decisive state action.

The government has pledged further consultation before introducing legislation, but the announcement has already ignited a fierce debate at home and across Europe.
