EU KILLS 2035 COMBUSTION CAR BAN – Its emissions target is reduced to 90%

The European Union has reportedly scrapped its plan to enforce a full ban on the sale of new combustion engine (ICE) cars by 2035.

Manfred Weber, President of the European Parliament’s largest party, the EPP, confirmed that the 100% phase-out plan is now “off the table.” Instead of an outright technology ban, the EU will adopt new, flexible emissions reduction rules for car manufacturers.

Weber suggested the decision was made to protect the sector, emphasizing that the retention of engine production for Europe “secures tens of thousands of industrial jobs” and sends a critical signal to the entire automotive industry.

The move reverses legislation signed off in 2021 that would have effectively forced manufacturers to sell only electric vehicles (EVs) after 2035. This radical change follows intense lobbying from European governments and major car makers, including Volkswagen, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Stellantis.

The official announcement from the EU is anticipated tomorrow Tuesday, December 16
