EU WARNS AGAINST PUTIN HUNGARY VISIT – EU chief says Putin’s Hungary trip ‘not nice’ as Trump plans peace talks in Budapest
European Union Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has voiced concern over reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin could travel to Hungary for peace talks on Ukraine.
Speaking in Luxembourg ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas said while peace efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump are welcome, it’s vital that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also be part of the discussions.
Putin faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, though Hungary—an EU member—is currently in the process of withdrawing from the ICC.
France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Putin’s presence on EU soil would only make sense if it led to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
Kallas added that the bloc’s 19th package of sanctions against Russia is expected to be adopted this week, though not before Monday.
