GERMANY CALLS FOR CLOSER EU-ASIA COLLABORATION- Chancellor Merz says new forms of cooperation between Europe and Asia are necessary
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on European and Asian middle powers to build a strategic alliance in trade, technology and security, warning that an erosion of the established global order threatened their shared interests.
Merz gave a keynote speech today at Singapore’s ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, on the first stop of a week-long Asia trip that will also take him to Japan and South Korea.
Merz said new forms of cooperation between Europe and Asia were necessary and called for combining European and Asian trade agreements.
Addressing the ongoing war in the Ukraine, Merz said the country must have a seat at any table where the war is discussed. Talks between the United States and Russia “can never find solutions without Ukraine,” he said, calling any deal made without Kyiv “absolutely not acceptable.”
