GERMANY’S MERZ MEETS POLISH PRESIDENT IN BERLIN-Chancellor Merz says Poland is an important European neighbour

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the Berlin chancellery on his first official state visit to Germany today.

Merz described Poland as an important European neighbour and close friend of Germany. ‘Poland plays a key role in the European Union and in strengthening the European pillar of NATO,’ said deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille after the meeting between Merz and Nawrocki.

Both had strongly condemned Russia’s recent violations of Polish airspace, the government spokesman said. The Chancellor had emphasised that Germany stood ‘firmly and unwaveringly’ alongside Poland.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had earlier received Polish President Karol Nawrocki with military honours at Bellevue Castle in Berlin today.  Nawrocki is  also set to visit France and will be meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron later on.
