HUNGARY PM MAKES SYMBOLIC POLAND VISIT – Peter Magyar seeks closer ties with Europe on first foreign trip

Peter Magyar has begun a two-day visit to Poland in his first foreign trip since taking office, in a move widely seen as a signal of Hungary’s shift back toward the European mainstream.

Magyar is due to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Wednesday. Tusk returned to power in 2023 leading a pro-European coalition that restored ties with Brussels and unlocked billions in frozen EU funding.

The visit follows Magyar’s election victory over nationalist leader Viktor Orban, ending years of strained relations between Warsaw and Budapest over Hungary’s stance on Ukraine and its close ties with Russia.

Talks are expected to focus on support for Ukraine, regional cooperation within the Visegrad group, and the case of a former Polish justice minister, who fled to the United States after being granted asylum in Hungary while facing abuse of power charges in Poland.
