LAMMY BACKS STARMER AMID LABOUR TURMOIL – Deputy PM says no leadership challenger has emerged

David Lammy has publicly backed Prime Minister Keir Starmer, insisting there is currently no credible challenger within Labour to replace him.

Speaking outside Downing Street, the Deputy Prime Minister said no one had yet come forward with enough support under the party’s internal rules to mount a serious leadership bid, and urged MPs calling for change to “take a breath.”

His comments come after a turbulent 48 hours for the Labour government, with multiple ministerial aides resigning and more than 70 Labour MPs publicly calling for Starmer to step down.

Despite growing unrest, around 110 Labour MPs have now signed a separate statement backing the prime minister, arguing that a leadership contest would risk deepening political instability within the party.

Starmer, speaking earlier in London, warned colleagues against triggering a leadership battle, saying it would create chaos, though his appeal has so far done little to halt the growing internal pressure.
