NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR CAPACITY GROWS – IAEA warns of new enrichment activity and rapid developments

North Korea has made what officials describe as “very serious” advances in its nuclear weapons programme, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Director General Rafael Grossi said there are signs of increased activity at key facilities within the Yongbyon nuclear complex, including reactors and reprocessing units.

He also indicated the likely addition of a new uranium enrichment facility, pointing to a rapid expansion in the country’s nuclear capabilities.

However, Grossi said there is no evidence so far of Russian technology being used in North Korea’s weapons programme.

He also called on South Korea to work closely with the agency on its plans for nuclear-powered submarines, warning of potential proliferation risks as regional tensions continue to rise.
