NYC WILDFIRE SMOKE POSES HEALTH RISK – Mamdani said  Thursday would be the worst day of the smoke event

Smoke from Canadian wildfires pushed air quality in New York City into unhealthy levels on Thursday, prompting officials to urge residents to stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity and use protective masks as a heat emergency gripped the city.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the state had forecast Thursday would be the worst day of the smoke event for the New York City region, with conditions dangerous for everyone, not only people with asthma, heart conditions or older adults.

Mamdani said the wildfire smoke, mid-90s Fahrenheit temperatures and risks from flooding underscored the growing impact of the climate crisis on the city and the need for short, medium and long-term safety measures for New Yorkers in coming years.
