SARKOZY BEGINS PRISON SENTENCE – Ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy starts 5-year jail term over Libya campaign funding

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reported to prison in Paris to begin his five-year sentence for illegally financing his 2007 campaign with funds from Libya.

Sarkozy was seen leaving his home hand in hand with his wife, Carla Bruni, on Tuesday morning before heading to La Santé prison.

The 69-year-old former leader, who governed France from 2007 to 2012, becomes the first French president to be jailed since World War Two collaborator Marshal Philippe Pétain — marking a dramatic fall from grace for the once high-profile politician.
