TOWER HAMLETS APPROVES 130% PAY RISES! – Aspire-run council faces backlash over allowance increases amid child poverty crisis

Councillors in Tower Hamlets have approved major increases to council pay allowances, with some roles receiving rises of up to 130 percent despite the borough having the highest child poverty rate in Britain.

The East London authority, controlled by Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s Aspire Party, voted through changes expected to add around one hundred and seventy-eight thousand pounds to councillor allowances each year. The decision has triggered criticism from residents and opponents who say the increases are excessive during a continuing cost-of-living crisis.

The largest rises apply to special responsibility allowances linked to senior committee and leadership positions within the council.

The Aspire Party is a local political party based in Tower Hamlets and led by Lutfur Rahman. It was formed after Rahman returned to politics following a period in which he was removed from office and banned from holding elected office over electoral misconduct findings connected to the 2014 mayoral election. He denied corruption allegations but was found guilty of electoral offences by an election court.

Aspire is not a national party like Labour or the Conservatives. It operates mainly in Tower Hamlets and campaigns heavily on local issues including council housing, low council tax, welfare support and local community spending. The party won control of Tower Hamlets Council after Rahman was re-elected as executive mayor in 2022, and it strengthened its position further in the 2026 local elections.

Aspire’s support base is widely associated with parts of the borough’s large British Bangladeshi and Muslim communities, and critics accuse Aspire of divisive identity politics and concentrating power around Rahman’s leadership
