DC MAYOR CREDITS FEDERAL SURGE FOR SHARP DROP IN CRIME – Mayor credits the increase in federal officers
In Washington, D.C., officials say violent crime has fallen sharply after a federal law enforcement surge.
Mayor Muriel Bowser reported carjackings down 87% over the past 20 days, along with fewer homicides and gun crimes. She thanked federal officers for their support and backed President Trump’s request for $2 billion to strengthen infrastructure in the district.
The move follows Trump’s declaration of a crime emergency earlier this month, which brought in National Guard troops and temporarily placed local policing under federal control.
But the response remains divisive. A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows only 36% of Americans support the federal takeover, with just 8% of Democrats in favour.
While violent crime is declining, Washington still ranks among the most dangerous cities in the country.
