AUSTRALIA WARNS OVER CHINESE MISSILE TEST – Canberra calls planned Pacific launch “destabilising” {MM}
Australia says China has notified it of plans to carry out a sea-based missile test in the Pacific, prompting fresh concerns over regional security.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the planned launch as “destabilising”, warning it could heighten tensions across the Indo-Pacific.
The announcement came just hours after Australia and Fiji signed a new defence pact, committing both nations to assist one another in the event of an attack.
China last conducted an intercontinental ballistic missile test in 2024. Maritime tracking data also indicates that three Chinese satellite-tracking vessels are currently positioned across the Pacific, underlining Beijing’s expanding military presence in the region.
