Air travel in and out of the UK slumped by 71% in 2021 as the second year of the Covid-19 crisis took its toll on international flying, according to a report. Just over 406,000 international flights operated from the UK this year compared with almost 1.4m in 2019 before the pandemic struck and travel restrictions were imposed, said the aviation analytics firm Cirium in research reported by the BBC. UK domestic flights were found to have declined by almost 60%. The budget carrier Ryanair remained the largest airline in the UK, Cirium said, operating more than 100,000 UK flights in 2021,…
Jürgen Klopp said Liverpool have given Manchester City the chance to run away with the title as he rued a “really bad” performance in their 1-0 defeat at Leicester. The substitute Ademola Lookman sealed victory as a depleted Leicester side, missing six injured defenders, became the first team in 35 games to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool, leaving Klopp struggling to explain what went wrong. Liverpool could be 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side when they kick off on Sunday and, as Klopp noted, either they or Chelsea will then drop points in their meeting at Stamford Bridge. “It’s a…
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of cruise ships under investigation with COVID-19 outbreaks has risen to 86 on Tuesday, up from 68 a day earlier. The CDC is currently investigating 38 ships, with 48 additional vessels having already undergone investigation but remaining “under observation.” Another 22 ships haven’t reported any cases. Three ships reported COVID-19 cases below the investigation threshold. The most affected cruise ships belong to Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Norwegian. “While cruising will always pose some risk of COVID-19 transmission, CDC is committed to working with cruise ship operators to ensure that cruise ship passenger operations are conducted in a way…
The government is to hold emergency meetings with the bosses of the UK’s biggest energy suppliers, after providers warned on Thursday of a “national crisis” that could see bills skyrocket more than 50% to £2,000 a year. Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, is to hold virtual meetings on Monday with energy suppliers, who are pushing the government to intervene to alleviate the unprecedented rises in consumers’ bills caused by soaring wholesale gas prices. The energy industry believes the crisis, which has seen more than 26 energy suppliers go bust at a cost of £1.8bn to date, could be made more manageable if the government…
Ministers have chosen a senior banker as the new chair of NHS England, with a brief to push through changes in the way the service operates and cut spiralling waiting lists. Richard Meddings, a former chair of TSB Bank, will take over the role early in the new year. He will be paid £63,000 a year for working two to three days a week, the Cabinet Office said . He will succeed Conservative peer Lord Prior of Brampton, who has held the post for four years. However, unlike Prior – who had been a health minister and chaired two NHS hospital trusts before taking…
Internazionale have terminated Christian Eriksen’s contract after the Denmark midfielder was suspended from playing in Italy because of his cardiac device implant. The 29-year-old has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening game of the European Championship against Finland in June and receiving life-saving treatment on the pitch. Inter said in October that the Italian medical authority had suspended Eriksen from playing in Serie A because of a rule prohibiting the use of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device. “FC Internazionale Milano announces that an agreement has been reached for the consensual termination of Christian Eriksen’s contract,” Inter said in a statement.…
Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas won’t dock at the island nations of Aruba and Curacao this week following an onboard COVID-19 outbreak involving some 55 passengers and crew members, the firm said. All passengers aged 12 and older and crew members have to show proof they’ve been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in order to board the ship, according to the cruise line’s policy. “The decision was made together with the islands out of an abundance of caution due to the current trend of COVID-19 cases in the destinations’ communities as well as crew and guests testing positive on board,” Royal Caribbean said in a…
Jurgen Klopp will fret over squeezing a two-legged semi-final with Arsenal into Liverpool’s already demanding schedule but, for a fleeting moment at least, the Carabao Cup brought him joy at Anfield. A rousing fightback and penalty shootout victory against Leicester underlined that, while the faces may change, Liverpool’s indefatigable spirit does not waver. Liverpool came from 2-0 down and 3-1 down to take an enthralling quarter-final to penalties courtesy of a 95th‑minute equaliser from Takumi Minamino. The Japan international missed the chance for a perfect night by blazing Liverpool’s fifth and potentially decisive spot-kick over the bar. But no other teammate faltered.…
The police watchdog will not investigate a complaint that officers failed to properly look into an alleged party at Downing Street during lockdown in December last year, it has said. Jenny Jones, a Green party peer, asked the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to investigate after reports that a gathering took place on 18 December 2020 that involved food, party games and drinking late into the night. In a letter to the IOPC this month, Jones said officers were on duty at Downing Street to protect the building and that part of their job involved controlling access. “If there was…
A federal court in Florida has temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate directed at federal contractors, marking a small win for the sunshine state as litigation over the matter continues. Florida is among 19 states that sued the Biden administration in late October over the federal vaccine mandate for government contractors, outlined under Executive Order 14042 that President Joe Biden issued on Sept. 9. The executive order requires almost all federal employees to get a COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of employment, including civilian federal employees and contractors. Regular COVID-19 testing wouldn’t be an option, but religious or medical exemptions from vaccination may be granted. U.S. District…
