Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said she doesn’t have the answers on whether COVID-19 booster shots will be mandated on a yearly basis. “I want to emphasize that our goal right now is to stay ahead of the virus. We want to boost now so we don’t end up in a vulnerable place,” said Walensky in answer to a question by a CBS News anchor about whether people should be prepared for annual booster doses. “Your question is an important one, and it is one we don’t necessarily have the answer for yet. We are working to stay…
Nuno Espírito Santo admitted he got his starting personnel all wrong during a chastening 3-1 derby defeat at Arsenal. The Tottenham manager began with Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele as the No 8s in a 4-3-3 and his team were overrun in the first half. Arsenal led 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka and, although Spurs stabilised and pulled one back late on through Son Heung-min, it did little to placate Nuno. The manager substituted Alli at half-time, sending on Oliver Skipp and changing to 4-2-3-1. He also replaced Japhet Tanganga…
Germany is set for weeks or even months of protracted coalition talks after the race to succeed Angela Merkel after 16 years in power failed to produce a clear winner, with the centre-left Social Democrats just ahead of the centre-right conservative alliance according to official returns. Preliminary results released on the election commission’s website showed that the Social Democrats (SPD) led by Olaf Scholz had won the largest share of the vote at 25.7%. The centre-right CDU-CSU bloc led for so long by the outgoing chancellor garnered 24.1%, its worst showing in its seven-decade history. The Green party, in jubilant mood after…
More than 40 climate protesters have blocked roads around the UK’s busiest port as part of a campaign to tackle fuel poverty and reduce the UK’s climate emissions. Campaigners from the group Insulate Britain blocked the A20 around Dover just after 8.15 on Friday morning. The protests – which are demanding that all UK housing is fully insulated by 2030 – have brought widespread disruption, with activists repeatedly blocking sections of the M25 over the past 10 days. They have been condemned as selfish and dangerous by politicians and drawn an angry reaction from many motorists. Earlier this week the…
BREXIT Britain will not fare as bad as Germany in the looming energy crisis after a reported gas squeeze from Vladimir Putin, an expert has told Express.co.uk. The EU now also faces gas shortages and could be at risk of gas shutdowns and rations as prices skyrocket to record highs – with German media putting the blame on Brexit. But it comes after Gazprom, the state-owned Russian gas company, reported decreased resources flowing into Europe following a spat over the implementation of EU law along the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The deal, struck between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin, will see…
BRUSSELS—The EU aims to have a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets, and headphones under a European Commission proposal presented on Thursday in a world first, with the move impacting iPhone maker Apple more than its rivals. The move has been more than 10 years in the making, with the European Union executive touting environmental benefits and 250 million euros ($293 million) in annual savings for users. Under the Commission’s proposal, a USB-C connector will become the standard port for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers, and handheld videogame consoles. Chargers will also be sold separately from electronic…
Wayne Rooney has laid bare the chaos at crisis-hit Derby County by revealing he has not spoken with Mel Morris for more than six weeks and said the owner’s address in the wake of entering administration was insincere. Morris met playing and coaching staff on Tuesday, 24 hours before the insolvency specialists Quantuma were placed in control of the Championship club. The administrators have conceded there will be several redundancies but said they are confident Derby would not be liquidated and that a buyer would be found, with six parties expressing their interest. Last week Rooney said he and his players discovered Derby were…
Three of the UK’s biggest operators of petrol stations have warned of fuel shortages at some forecourts across the country, with the severe lack of lorry drivers nationwide now disrupting fuel supplies. BP said yesterday that up to 100 of its forecourts were short of at least one grade of fuel, with several forced to close entirely due to problems with supplies. Esso said that a handful of its petrol stations operated alongside Tesco Express stores were affected, while some of the supermarket chain’s own-branded sites are also suffering outages. Though Downing Street said there was “no shortage of fuel”,…
The State Police Association of Massachusetts has called upon a judge to suspend the state’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for troopers. Suffolk Superior Court judge Jackie Cowin heard the case on Wednesday. The state police union filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth last Friday, seeking an injunctive relief prohibiting the state from implementing its vaccine mandate without bargaining with the union. The complaint (pdf) claimed that the mandate would cause the union and its members “foreseeable, immediate harm,” which includes the impacts of vaccinations, potential side effects, and subjecting troopers to discipline up to termination. On Aug. 19, Gov. Charlie Baker…
A judge in Florida on Wednesday blocked a city’s COVID-19 mandate from taking effect. Circuit Judge Monica Brasington, a Sen. Rick Scott appointee, granted a request for an emergency injunction. That means the mandate, which was slated to take effect on Oct. 1, is blocked for now. “The city did not put on any evidence, at all, at the injunction hearing,” Brasington wrote in a 7-page ruling. “Without any evidence, the court is unable to consider whether the vaccine mandate serves a compelling interest through the least restrictive means, whether the vaccine mandate meets a strict scrutiny test, a rational basis test, or…
