An elderly COVID-19 patient has recovered after a court order allowed him to be treated with ivermectin, despite objections from the hospital in which he was staying, according to the family’s attorney. After an Illinois hospital insisted on administering expensive remdesivir to the patient and the treatment failed, his life was saved after a court ordered that an outside medical doctor be allowed to use the inexpensive ivermectin to treat him, over the hospital’s strenuous objections. Ivermectin tablets have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat humans with intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, two conditions caused by parasitic worms. Some topical…
A day after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO, the social media firm announced sweeping policy changes targeting the sharing of photos or videos of individuals. “Beginning today,” Twitter said in a statement Tuesday, “we will not allow the sharing of private media, such as images or videos of private individuals without their consent” before adding that “publishing people’s private info is also prohibited under the policy, as is threatening or incentivizing others to do so.” The platform has already banned users from posting or sharing others’ personal information—including their identity, documents, financial information, or addresses—without their consent. Twitter’s Tuesday statement said the latest…
JOHANNA KONTA has announced that she will be stepping away from the sport. Former British No.1 Jo Konta has announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 30. Konta won her fourth WTA title at the Nottingham Open in June but was forced out of Wimbledon and the Olympics by Covid-19. She reached three Grand Slam singles semi-finals – including Wimbledon in 2017 – but has been dogged by a chronic knee injury in recent seasons. Konta revealed her engagement to long-term boyfriend Jackson Wade earlier this year. In a statement released today, Konta said she is “so…
The government’s green homes grant scheme underperformed badly and risks damaging future efforts to deliver net zero, the public accounts committee (PAC) said. Hailed by the prime minister, Boris Johnson, as a key plank in his green industrial revolution, the grants only upgraded about 47,500 homes out of the 600,000 originally planned. They also delivered a small fraction of the expected jobs. The grants were intended to support the public to make their homes more energy efficient and move away from fossil fuel heating by installing heat pumps and solar energy. But the PAC said the scheme unveiled in 2020…
Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for the Premier League match at home against Arsenal on Thursday because the club have not received the requisite paperwork for Ralf Rangnick. The German has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the season but has not yet been granted a work visa. A United statement said: “While the club follows the regulatory process around a work visa, Carrick will continue at the helm.” Whether Rangnick will have some input into team selection and tactics regarding the Arsenal match may become clear when Carrick speaks to the media at lunchtime on Wednesday.…
A federal judge in Louisiana on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction to block President Joe Biden’s national COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers, which had been set to go into effect next week. U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty in Monroe, Louisiana, issued the injunction (pdf) to expand a separate order issued on Monday by a Missouri federal court, which applied to just 10 states. In doing so, the judge ruled in favor of a request from state Attorney General Jeff Landry, a Republican, to block an emergency regulation issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Nov. 4. Landry…
A federal judge on Nov. 29 halted the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers, although the ruling only applies to 10 states. The mandate, promulgated earlier this month by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), required approximately 17 million workers to get a jab or face termination. But CMS lacks the authority to impose such a broad mandate, U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp, a Trump appointee, ruled. “Plaintiffs are likely to succeed in their argument that Congress has not provided CMS the authority to enact the regulation at issue here,” Schelp wrote in a 32-page ruling that granted a…
Lionel Messi scooped up his seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday evening. Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski kept it classy after Lionel Messi pipped him to the coveted Ballon d’Or on Monday evening. Many felt as though the striker could, or perhaps should have won himself, particularly after missing out in 2020 when the Covid pandemic led to the award being scrapped. As it happened, Messi extended his untouchable record in Ballon d’Or terms by notching his seventh award in Paris. That takes him two clear of Cristiano Ronaldo, his nearest challenger over the course of his career, who had to settle…
