The government is to give its official response later to the High Court’s decision that Parliament should vote on the formal process of leaving the EU. Ministers lost their case last week, after arguing they did not need the consent of MPs and peers to make the choice of when to trigger Article 50. Campaigners say that giving Parliament a vote is vital in a democracy. Prime Minister Theresa May will not give the statement to MPs at 15:30 GMT as she is on a trade visit to India. The High Court ruled last Thursday that Parliament should have a…
Ryanair has raised its long-term traffic forecast by 10% and predicts it will be carrying more than 200 million passengers a year by March 2024. The airline said it believed it could deliver profitable growth across Europe “despite the uncertainty of Brexit”. However, the UK’s vote to leave the EU meant that Ryanair had reduced its planned UK growth in 2017 from 12% to about 5%. The news came as Ryanair reported a 7% increase in first-half profits. It made €1.168bn (£1.04bn; $1.29bn) in the April-to-September period, which it described as “a strong first half”. However, it warned: “Weaker air…
The FBI has given Hillary Clinton a huge boost with just hours to go in the US presidential campaign by clearing her of wrongdoing following a new trawl of email material. FBI director James Comey told Congress on Sunday that Mrs Clinton should not face charges over messages found on the computer of disgraced politician Anthony Weiner – the estranged husband of the Democratic candidate’s close aide Huma Abedin. He said the bureau had come to the same conclusion it reached in July, when it ruled that Mrs Clinton was “extremely careless” in handling classified information while Secretary of State, but that…
“It doesn’t matter what’s in front of you; refuse to be daunted. Close your eyes and say, ‘In the Name of Jesus, I prevail over circumstances!’ Say it every day and refuse to doubt.” -Rev Chris Oyakhilome D.Sc., D.D (Rhapsody of Realities, 06 November 2016)
“[God] is asking me to tell you to go forward in your life; have no fear,” Pastor announces! The BLW President just declared November 2016 to be ‘the Month of Moving Forward’, after reading the inspiring accounts of the Israelites before the Red Sea and Isaac in the land of Gerar in Exodus 14:12-16 and Genesis 26 respectively. As the man of God caused us to stand again with Moses and the children of Israel before a daunting and seemingly impossible obstacle, he said “God’s not looking at the sea like there’s a hindrance; it’s nothing to God!” As the…
“Make a difference where you are. God brought you into this country so that through you, He’ll touch others with His love, power, glory and grace.” -Rev Chris Oyakhilome D.Sc., DD (ROR A Topical Compendium, Vol 4)
“When you face challenges, don’t cry. Stand your ground in faith. Keep affirming the Word, knowing that greater is He that’s in you, than he that’s in the world.” -Rev Chris Oyakhilome D.Sc., DD (27 October, Rhapsody of Realities 2016)
Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has pledged to return stronger than ever after undergoing surgery on a fractured arm. The right-back sustained the injury against Manchester City in the EFL Cup last week and missed Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League. The Sun report the Ecuador international faces six weeks on the sidelines, which would put him out until the visit of Tottenham on December 11. Valencia said: “Now I’m thinking only about recovery. I want to come back soon and help my team. I’ll come back stronger and I’m always optimistic.” Valencia has made 11 appearances in all competitions under Jose…
Mark Carney is reportedly ready to serve his full eight-year term as Bank of England governor despite demands from pro-Brexit campaigners for his resignation. The Canadian is likely to make an announcement on his future this week and is “leaning strongly” towards remaining, according to the Financial Times. However, he will speak to Prime Minister Theresa May and Chancellor Philip Hammond before making a final decision. There has been speculation he would step down. Mr Carney has been criticised by some for his conduct during the EU referendum campaign, during which he warned of the economic dangers of a Leave…
A group of MPs says the government is incorrect to keep claiming it is allocating an extra £10bn to the NHS in England over the next five years. The Health Committee has written to the chancellor to say using the figure gives the “false impression that the NHS is awash with cash”. The group said the figure was closer to £4.5bn and called for more NHS funding in November’s Autumn Statement. But the government insisted the £10bn figure was accurate. The Health Select Committee, chaired by Dr Sarah Wollaston, has been hearing evidence over recent months on the state of…
