BRITISH BUSINESSES PAUSE NET ZERO GOALS –  A survey revealed they struggle to manage the escalating cost pressures

New research highlights a growing trend among British businesses to delay or scale back their environmental Net zero commitments as they struggle to manage the “cost of doing business.”

A survey of over 2,000 UK adults indicates that three-quarters of respondents believe rising energy bills, wage growth, and mounting operating costs are forcing companies to deprioritize sustainability. This cooling in climate-focused investment coincides with the government’s preparation to formalize the Seventh Carbon Budget, which sets the UK’s legally binding emissions pathway through 2042.

While supporters of the legislation argue that early investment in energy efficiency is essential for long-term economic security and cost reduction, critics warn that rigid mandates could erode competitiveness.

The debate arrives at a pivotal moment, as ministers face pressure to balance aggressive climate goals with the need for industrial stability.
