BURNHAM SET TO BECOME LABOUR LEADER – Andy Burnham to be confirmed as Labour leader ahead of becoming Prime Minister next week
Andy Burnham is set to be confirmed as the new leader of the Labour Party at a special conference in central London today, paving the way for him to become Britain’s next Prime Minister.
The former Greater Manchester Mayor secured the backing of 349 Labour MPs, leaving him as the only candidate in the leadership race. He will formally take over as party leader following an announcement by National Executive Committee Chair and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.
Despite the leadership handover, Sir Keir Starmer will remain Prime Minister until Monday. He is expected to travel to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to the King after announcing last month that he would step down following two years in office.
Mr Burnham will then be invited to Buckingham Palace to be asked by the King to form a government. He has pledged to put the cost of living at the centre of his agenda, expand powers for local authorities and unite the Labour Party as he prepares to enter Downing Street.
