CHINA SAYS EU TRADE CURBS WOULD HARM CONSUMERS – The EU has long accused China of unfair trade practices

China’s foreign ministry on Thursday (May 28) criticized potential European Union trade measures, warning they would harm consumers and businesses and weaken long-term competitiveness.

Such an approach inevitably leads to the conclusion of imbalanced trade ties, Mao Ning, a ministry spokesperson, said at a regular news conference.

The EU is not forced to trade with China, Mao said, warning that China will take all measures necessary to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

The EU has long accused China of unfair trade practices including using state-backed subsidies, market access barriers and policies it says distort competition.

Major European countries including France, Italy and Spain are pushing the EU to revamp trade measures to defend the bloc more effectively against excessively cheap imports.
