EU & AUSTRALIA SIGN TRADE DEAL – It marks the culmination of eight years of negotiations

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen signed a comprehensive trade agreement today.

The deal, finalised during a signing ceremony in the nation’s capital, marks the culmination of eight years of negotiations and signals a decisive strategic pivot for the European Union as it seeks to reduce its industrial reliance on Beijing.

The centrepiece of the agreement is the removal of tariffs on Australian critical minerals, a move von der Leyen described as “crucial” for Europe’s economic sovereignty. As the EU manoeuvres to diversify its resources away from China—which has recently tightened export controls on essential raw materials—this pact secures a stable, democratic pipeline for the minerals required for high-tech manufacturing and the green energy transition.

The deal follows similar successful accords the EU struck with Indonesia and India over the past 18 months, solidifying Europe’s aggressive new engagement strategy within the Indo-Pacific.

The visit was also marked by a significant diplomatic milestone: President von der Leyen became the first woman in history to address a joint sitting of Australia’s Parliament. In her speech to lawmakers, she underscored that the agreement is more than a commercial contract; it is a “security partnership” designed to protect shared values and economic interests.
