EU WEIGHS SOCIAL MEDIA BAN – Von der Leyen announced social media restrictions on more than 65 million young Europeans as early as this summer
The European Union could introduce major restrictions on social media use for children under sixteen as early as this summer.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the proposal during a summit in Copenhagen, saying Brussels is considering a unified age-verification system across all 27 EU member states.
The move is aimed at tackling what the Commission describes as harmful and addictive online algorithms affecting young people, with platforms such as Meta, TikTok and X expected to face tighter rules.
Supporters say the proposal would strengthen child safety and mental health protections online, following similar measures introduced in countries including Australia and France.
But the plans could trigger tensions with the United States, after President Donald Trump warned against regulations targeting American technology firms, raising the prospect of retaliatory trade measures.
