FRANCE SEIZES SANCTIONED RUSSIAN TANKER – Britain backs operation targeting vessels linked to Putin’s so-called shadow fleet
French authorities have seized a Russian-linked oil tanker operating under international sanctions in a joint effort supported by Britain to curb Moscow’s ability to bypass restrictions on energy exports. The vessel was intercepted off the coast of Brittany as part of a wider operation targeting Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” — a network of ships accused of transporting oil outside sanctioned channels.
Officials say the tanker is suspected of helping move Russian crude through complex shipping arrangements designed to avoid Western sanctions imposed following the war in Ukraine. The operation forms part of broader European efforts to tighten enforcement measures and disrupt revenue streams that help finance Russia’s military activities.
Britain welcomed the action, describing it as an important step in protecting the integrity of sanctions and maintaining pressure on the Kremlin. European governments have increasingly focused on shadow fleet operations in recent months, warning that such vessels can also pose environmental and maritime safety risks due to concerns over maintenance, insurance and regulatory oversight.
