NURSERIES TO REPORT ‘RACIST’ TODDLERS – Over 300 Welsh nurseries received new guidance telling staff to report certain incidents to the Police
More than 300 nurseries across Wales have received new “anti-racist” guidance backed by the Welsh Government, instructing staff to report certain racist incidents to the police. The directive, developed by Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning (DARPL), aims to transform early years environments for children aged 12 and under.
Childcare workers are now advised to triage incidents to determine if they constitute a hate crime, with instructions to contact emergency services via 999 or non-emergency lines at 101 when appropriate.
For incidents not classified as hate crimes, the guidance recommends internal resolution through discussions with colleagues, parents, and the children involved. Beyond reporting protocols, the guidance mandates a comprehensive audit of nursery environments to ensure diversity is reflected in all materials, including dolls, books, and posters.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the National Day Nurseries Association and the Welsh Government to embed systemic anti-racism throughout the nation’s childcare and playwork sectors.
