OUTGOING PM KEIR STARMER GIVES FINAL SPEECH- New PM Andy Burnham to give speech at 10 Downing Street
Sir Keir Starmer has said his work is done in his final speech as prime minister.
Addressing the nation from outside No 10, Sir Keir said he had left Britain in a better state than when he entered Downing Street two years ago.
The outgoing Prime Minister insisted that his government had made the economy stronger, put defence on a better footing and enhanced the country’s international reputation.
Describing his premiership as “the privilege of my life”, he said: “I am about to visit His Majesty the King to offer my resignation and close the book on my time as Prime Minister. My work is done.” He added that “In six-and-a-half years I took our party from a historic defeat in 2019, changed it so it was fit to face the country and won a landslide general election victory in 2024. Since then, it has been the privilege of my life to serve you, and this great country, as Prime Minister and I am confident that Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago.”
outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer wished his successor Andy Burnham “every success” as “I now pass the baton” to him. Starmer, who says Burnham has his full support, added that he is going with good grace, with a smile, and is proud of everything he has achieved.”
Andy Burnham will then inform the monarch of his intention to form a government, becoming the King’s fourth prime minister in four years. Burnham will then meet with the King who will invite him to form a government.
Starmer is now at Buckingham Palace, where he will formally offer his resignation to King Charles III.
Starmer was driven into the main quadrangle of Buckingham Palace, ready to meet the King along with his wife Lady Victoria.
It’s an important show of constitutional monarchy.
He arrived at the luggage door of the palace because of the renovation work that is being done elsewhere.
They are expected to use the access of the Chinese dining room, again not the normal venue they would host this in, so things are a bit different but there is tradition over what will happen in the next 20 minutes.
Starmer is expected to meet the King privately, and there will be two chairs next to one another, they will chat and a single photograph will be issued later on.
The King will accept Starmer’s resignation, and there is time for the two men to reflect on Starmer’s time in office.
The PM’s two children and wife are there, who will also meet the King.
And that will be it. Within minutes after, we expect to see the arrival of Andy Burnham who is expected to give his address at Number 10 Downing St.
