PERU CONFIRMS PRESIDENT ELECT- President-elect Keiko Fujimori received her official credentials in Lima

Peru’s president-elect Keiko Fujimori received her official credentials on Wednesday (July 15) in Lima, becoming the first woman elected by popular vote to lead the country’s government. The ceremony, held at the Gran Teatro Nacional and led by National Elections Jury (JNE) President Roberto Burneo, also formalized the credentials of Fujimori’s running mates, First Vice President Luis Galarreta and Second Vice President Miguel Torres.

Burneo told the audience that the process left “a fact of deep historical significance” as, for the first time, Peruvians had chosen a woman to hold the presidency.

Supporters gathered outside the theater with balloons and Peruvian flags celebrated the moment, chanting in her support. The JNE proclaimed Fujimori’s Fuerza Popular ticket the winner of the presidential runoff on July 3, after she defeated leftist candidate Roberto Sanchez of Juntos por el Peru in the June 7 vote. Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), is due to be sworn in on July 28, Peru’s Independence day.
