POPE CALLS FOR UNITY THROUGH SPORT – Pope Leo urges athletes to promote peace during Vatican audience

Pope Leo XIV has welcomed Olympic and Paralympic athletes to the Vatican, calling on sport to serve as a force for unity in a divided world.

Addressing the group on Thursday, the Pope said sport should be “a place where people come together,” particularly at a time marked by conflict, rivalry and global tensions.

He highlighted the spirit of the Olympic Truce, saying athletes play an important role in promoting peace and mutual understanding beyond competition.

At the end of the audience, the Pope greeted athletes personally, shaking hands with those in attendance, as Italy reflected on a strong performance at the Games, which were hosted across Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
