RAYNER CLEARED IN TAX INVESTIGATION – Former deputy PM weighs in on Starmer pressure

Angela Rayner has reportedly been cleared of deliberate wrongdoing following an investigation into her tax affairs, according to reports.  The report says Rayner repaid around forty thousand pounds in unpaid stamp duty linked to a property purchase, but tax authorities did not impose any penalties and were satisfied there had been no tax avoidance.

Rayner resigned from government last year after admitting she had unintentionally underpaid tax and breached the ministerial code, stepping down as deputy prime minister and housing secretary.  Her comments now add to growing pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after she told the Guardian he would “have to reflect” on calls for his resignation following Labour’s heavy local election losses.

More than ninety Labour MPs are reportedly demanding Starmer set out a timetable for his departure, as divisions within the party continue to deepen.
