STARMER SAYS HE WILL NOT RESIGN – Reform UK surge deals Labour Party local election defeat

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is said to be facing a significant leadership crisis following a night of heavy losses for the Labour Party in the 2026 local elections. Initial results across 136 English council areas, alongside key contests in Scotland and Wales, indicate a shift in voter sentiment as Nigel Farage’s Reform UK captured dozens of seats in traditional Labour heartlands.

With early tallies showing Reform gaining over 100 seats while Labour shed at least 80, political analysts suggest these results could signal a fundamental realignment of the “Red Wall” and a direct challenge to Starmer’s authority.

For the first time in 47 years, Labour ceded its majority in Tameside, while Redditch, Hartlepool, Tamworth, and Exeter all shifted to no overall control following massive swings to Reform. In Halton, Labour managed to retain overall control despite losing 15 of the 16 seats it was defending, while in Wigan, Reform secured 20 seats previously held by the governing party.

Senior Labour figures have already begun calling for a reassessment of the government’s direction, with speculation intensifying regarding potential leadership challenges if final results in Scotland and Wales expected this afternoon mirror the English losses.
