THE KING MARKS THE START OF ROYAL WEEK IN SCOTLAND – King Charles attends ancient Ceremony of the Keys in Scotland

Britain’s King Charles took part in the ancient Ceremony of the Keys on Tuesday (June 30) at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the monarch’s official residence in Scotland.

The ceremony formally marks the beginning of Holyrood Week, the King’s annual programme of engagements across Scotland.

During the event, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh presents the Keys to the City to the monarch in a symbolic welcome to the Scottish capital.  The King then returns the keys, signifying that the city remains in the care of its civic authorities.

The centuries-old tradition reflects the historic relationship between the Crown and the City of Edinburgh and carries no legal or political authority.

Holyrood Week will see the King undertake a series of engagements, including investitures, community visits and events recognising public service and achievement across Scotland.
