TRIAL OVER LOCKERBIE BOMBING POSTPONED – Lockerbie bombing trial postponed by US judge days before start
A US federal judge has postponed the trial of the Libyan intelligence operative accused of building the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.
Jury selection for Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi had been due to begin this week, but Judge Dabney Friedrich delayed proceedings after the discovery of new evidence that defence lawyers need time to examine.
The judge has not set a new trial date, but a hearing is scheduled for September 1 to decide the next steps.
Mas’ud, now in his mid-70s, was brought to the United States from Libya in 2022 and has pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors accuse him of building the bomb that was placed inside a suitcase and loaded onto Pan Am Flight 103 at London Heathrow. The Boeing 747 exploded over Lockerbie on December 21, 1988, killing all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground.
The bombing remains one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in British history.
