TRUMP CLAIMS BURNHAM TO BACK OIL – US President says UK PM plans to expand North Sea drilling
US President Donald Trump says Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told him the UK intends to open up the North Sea to further oil development, in what would mark a significant shift in Britain’s energy policy.
Speaking after the pair held talks, Mr Trump said Mr Burnham planned to support increased oil exploration in the North Sea. If confirmed, the move would represent a change in direction following years of tighter restrictions on new fossil fuel projects.
The comments come as the new Prime Minister has pledged to prioritise economic growth while balancing the UK’s energy security and climate commitments.
The British government has not yet commented publicly on Mr Trump’s remarks or confirmed any changes to its policy on North Sea oil and gas exploration.
