UK CONSIDERS SUPERMARKET PRICE CAPS – Government weighs limits on essentials amid cost-of-living pressure
Rachel Reeves is facing growing scrutiny after reports that the government is considering a temporary cap on supermarket prices for essential food items in an effort to ease the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Under the proposals being discussed, ministers are examining whether to limit the cost of basic goods such as bread, milk, eggs and cooking oil, as households continue to feel pressure despite a recent easing in inflation. Officials stress the plans are at an early stage and no decision has been taken.
But the idea has already sparked political pushback, with critics warning that direct price controls could distort the market, disrupt supply chains and potentially lead to shortages or higher costs in other areas of the economy.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has warned that price caps “rarely work as intended,” arguing instead for long-term measures to boost production and investment, while business groups caution that supermarkets and suppliers are already under significant cost pressure.
