UK LAUNCHES GREAT BRITISH SUMMER SAVINGS – With major VAT cuts, the initiative is designed to lower the cost of summer outings and dining
Families across the UK will now benefit from a significant tax reduction designed to lower the cost of summer outings and dining. Under the new “Great British Summer Savings” initiative, VAT on eligible activities and children’s meals will be slashed from 20% to 5%. This policy applies across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, aiming to make family days out, cinema trips, and meals in restaurants more affordable during the summer months.
The scheme has garnered broad participation from both national chains and independent businesses, including major retailers like McDonald’s, Vue Cinemas, and Butlin’s. The tax cut covers a wide range of family-friendly experiences, such as tickets for theatres, museums, zoos, and amusement parks, as well as children’s menus served on-site. By reducing these costs, the government hopes to boost footfall for the hospitality and leisure sectors while providing direct financial relief to households managing current economic pressures.
In addition to these VAT reductions, the government is introducing free bus travel for all children in England throughout the month of August. This secondary measure is intended to further support families by providing an alternative to driving, particularly for those traveling to summer attractions.
