UK TO CRIMINALISE TICKET TOUTING – The move is being made head of the 2028 UEFA European Championship

The UK Government is preparing a significant legislative crackdown on ticket touting, proposing to make the unauthorised resale of tickets for major events—such as the 2028 UEFA European Championship—a criminal offence. This initiative is a central component of a broader national strategy to eliminate exploitative secondary markets and protect supporters from inflated prices.

Lead by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), a new sporting framework is under development to simplify the process of bidding for and delivering international events. The changes are designed to meet the rigorous requirements of global federations and event owners, making it easier for the UK to secure hosting rights.

Looking toward the future, the government is actively exploring bids for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the 2040s, as well as golf’s Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the 2030s. These potential bids, which would mark the first Olympic return since London 2012, are currently subject to detailed feasibility studies.
