US BOMBERS LEAVE RAF FAIRFORD – B-1 bombers return to US amid security concerns at UK base

The United States has withdrawn its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, just days after several men were arrested on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

The Pentagon says all the US bombers deployed to the Gloucestershire air base have now returned to their home stations in America. Around a dozen B-1 bombers had been based there and were used in US strikes on Iran.

The move comes amid concerns over a suspected plot targeting the base. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Britain has strong indications Iran was involved, although Tehran has rejected the allegations as baseless.

The UK had allowed the US to use RAF Fairford to launch strikes against Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
