VENEZUELA’S RODRIGUEZ CALLS FOR US SANCTION REMOVAL – Licenses issued by Washington were not enough

Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez on Tuesday called again for the removal of U.S. sanctions on Venezuela and said licenses issued by Washington were not enough to provide the long-term legal certainty needed for investment.

Rodriguez met in Caracas with a U.S. government energy delegation led by U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy Kyle  Haustveit and U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Venezuela Laura Dogu.

During the meeting, Rodriguez said Venezuela had urged President Donald Trump to lift all sanctions so investments in the country could develop fully. She said temporary licenses did not offer sufficient legal security because they were limited in time and did not give investors lasting guarantees.

The meeting came as Washington continued using licenses to authorize some transactions in Venezuela’s energy sector while broader sanctions remained in place.

Her remarks underscored Caracas’ longstanding position that sanctions relief, rather than case-by-case authorizations, was necessary to attract sustained foreign investment.
