WELSH POLICE TOILET POLICY LEGAL REVIEW – Concerns over alignment with Supreme Court equality ruling

A Welsh police force has insisted trans officers are allowed to use women’s lavatories and showers.

Gwent Police, which covers south-east Wales, said trans staff were entitled to use facilities for the gender they identified as “from the first day they present as that gender”.

Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary and minister for women and equalities, recently published long-awaited advice from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) telling services and businesses open to the public to bar trans women from women’s lavatories and changing facilities. Further guidance for employers has not yet been released.

The Women’s Rights Network (WRN) has threatened Gwent Police with a court battle after requesting gender policies under the freedom of information act from all forces to see whether they were complying with the Supreme Court judgment.
