Boris Johnson’s government will force through police powers to prevent disruptive yet peaceful protests as one of 38 new bills in Tuesday’s Queen’s speech. In a move to reinstate measures thrown out by the House of Lords in January, the government will announce new offences to stop protesters from “locking on” to infrastructure, extend stop and search powers, and make it illegal to obstruct transport projects. The public order bill will be aimed at quashing tactics employed by protest groups such as Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil. It will be seen as part of a plan by Johnson…
Hundreds of Australian doctors are “very terrified and very careful” of speaking out against the country’s COVID-19 health policies in case they are suspended from practicing, according to a human rights lawyer. Peter Fam, principal at Maat’s Method law firm, said since the start of the pandemic, regulatory bodies have imposed greater rules and regulations on doctors and other health practitioners who express a different opinion on existing medical orthodoxy around COVID-19. “I say hundreds of doctors because I’ve been on Zoom calls quite regularly with more than that number of medical practitioners. However, generally speaking, there’s only a couple of them…
People should not try to reduce their energy bills by improvising open fires at home, fire chiefs have warned, after a man in south-west London set fire to his property by burning timber in his living room to keep warm. The man was trying to avoid putting on the central heating in his home, fire investigators said. Fuel poverty campaigners said the incident – one of at least 100 involving open fires, log burners and heaters in the capital in the last few months – laid bare “the harsh and dangerous reality of the cost-of-living crisis”. Issuing an urgent safety warning, the…
The boss of one of Britain’s biggest energy suppliers has warned Rishi Sunak that further government help with the cost of living crisis must be announced as soon as possible to avoid an autumn emergency for struggling families. Keith Anderson, the chief executive of Scottish Power, said a fresh support package would be vital before a further dramatic increase in the cost of gas and electricity bills due in October, as Russia’s war in Ukraine drives up energy costs to eye-watering levels. The government energy regulator, Ofgem, is due to announce how much its consumer energy price cap is due to go up…
Fifteen minutes after the final whistle a bouncing, hazy blue away end resembled something of a pub lock‑in and Frank Lampard said he understood the Everton fans’ reluctance to make tracks home after watching their team record a precious victory in the fight for Premier League survival. After all, they had a first win away from Goodison Park since August to cherish and, better still, victory hoisted Everton to 16th, a point above the relegation zone with the advantage of a game in hand on those below them. Even a calamitous mix-up between Yerry Mina and Séamus Coleman, which allowed Patson Daka to cancel…
A federal judge has turned down a request from Special Counsel John Durham, essentially limiting evidence and testimony from the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee that prosecutors can use against former Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann. The ruling means that documents and testimony in the case could potentially suggest that the Clinton campaign and Democrats coordinated to push since-discredited allegations that in 2016, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump or his allies had a secret back channel between Trump Tower and a Russian bank. Democrats foisted that allegation, among others, in a bid to claim that Trump had ties with Russia, which became…
Police officers in Michigan took custody of a voting machine as the state expands its investigation into what it’s described as possible unauthorized access to election equipment. Michigan State Police and officials with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office seized an Irving Township voting tabulator on April 29, township supervisor Jamie Knight told The Epoch Times in an email. The seizure was done pursuant to a search warrant, she said. “The Township intends to fully cooperate with law enforcement, and the Township attorneys have been in contact with the Michigan State Police regarding this matter. The Township has no further comment at this…
LABOUR has had a great night in London. There’s no doubt about that. But for all their celebrating, it is yet to be seen if Sir Keir Starmer’s party has really done any more than just solidify support among the pro-EU elite. The Conservatives have taken a battering in the capital in the local elections, losing the long-held Wandsworth and Barnet councils, as well as unexpectedly ceding control of Westminster. In the capital the party is set to improve on its results of 2018 and 2014 – and is even on course for its best performance there since London’s 32…
House prices rose again in April, extending the longest run of monthly increases in six years, according to Halifax, but the lender said rising interest rates and squeezed household budgets would cool the market over the next year. The average cost of a home rose by 1.1% in April, the 10th consecutive monthly rise in the longest run since 2016, to a record high of £286,079. The price of the average property is up 10.8% on the same month last year, with homeowners enjoying an almost £50,000 increase in the price of their property over the last two years. Halifax…
Local Conservative leaders have called on Boris Johnson to consider his position after losing flagship London councils to Labour and council seats across the south to the Lib Dems, with several blaming Partygate and the cost of living crisis. In a boost for Labour, it took control of several Tory flagship councils in London, including Wandsworth for the first since the 1970s and Westminster for the first time since its creation in 1964. The Conservatives have also conceded in previously Tory-dominated Barnet. Johnson’s party were swept aside by Labour in Cumberland and Southampton, as well as losing control of West Oxfordshire and Portsmouth, with…
