The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) suspended enforcement of its vaccine mandate for healthcare workers after two court orders earlier this week. A memo issued by the agency, posted by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt on Twitter Thursday, said that CMS “remains confident” it will prevail in court but is “suspending activities related to the implementation and enforcement of this rule pending future development in the litigation.” “While these preliminary injunctions are in effect,” it continues to say, “CMS surveyors must not survey providers for compliance with the requirements” with the rule. The memo is referring to federal government officials conducting checks…
FIVE major banks have been fined a total of €344m (£292.62m) for participating in a foreign exchange trading cartel. UBS, Barclays, RBS and HSBC were given a total fine of €261m (£222.01m) after deciding to settle the case while Credit Suisse was fined €83m (£70.6m). The European Commission’s investigation revealed that some traders at the banks, involved in trading G10 currencies, had exchanged sensitive information and trading plans with each other. Using an online chatroom called Sterling Lads they had also occasionally coordinated their trading strategies. The sharing of information enabled them to make more informed decisions about when to…
Britain’s markets watchdog said it will introduce new rules on Friday to boost London’s role as a global centre for listing companies to help catch up with New York and meet increased competition from the European Union following Brexit. The revised listings rules, which were put out to public consultation earlier this year, will allow a targeted form of dual class share structures in premium listings for five years to allow a company’s founder to maintain an initial degree of control. It is a feature of the New York market which has attracted many tech company listings. A minimum of…

Freedom of speech is ‘seriously under threat’ at the BBC, one of its veteran broadcasters has warned. Michael Buerk, who has presented Radio 4’s The Moral Maze programme for more than 30 years, claimed the Corporation was falling victim to ‘woke’ ideology. Writing for the Radio Times, the former newsreader said that Radio 4’s ‘hopeless yearning to connect with yoof’ and ‘increasingly woke’ editorial choices put it at odds with its Middle England listeners. Mr Buerk, who presents the live discussion show about ethical issues, blamed social media sites such as Twitter for poisoning public debate and encouraging people to…
It was everything Everton had feared and Liverpool desired on their return to the stadium where the fault-lines first appeared in the title defence last season. Jürgen Klopp instructed his players to be “really aggressive in a football way”, not obsessed with revenge, and their vast superiority shone through an emphatic defeat of Rafael Benítez’s sorry side. Liverpool outclassed their local rivals in every department. The outstanding quality of the goals from Jordan Henderson, Mohamed Salah, twice, and Diogo Jota were in keeping with the overall performance, and extended Liverpool’s record of scoring twice or more to an 18th game in…
An elderly COVID-19 patient has recovered after a court order allowed him to be treated with ivermectin, despite objections from the hospital in which he was staying, according to the family’s attorney. After an Illinois hospital insisted on administering expensive remdesivir to the patient and the treatment failed, his life was saved after a court ordered that an outside medical doctor be allowed to use the inexpensive ivermectin to treat him, over the hospital’s strenuous objections. Ivermectin tablets have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat humans with intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, two conditions caused by parasitic worms. Some topical…
A day after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO, the social media firm announced sweeping policy changes targeting the sharing of photos or videos of individuals. “Beginning today,” Twitter said in a statement Tuesday, “we will not allow the sharing of private media, such as images or videos of private individuals without their consent” before adding that “publishing people’s private info is also prohibited under the policy, as is threatening or incentivizing others to do so.” The platform has already banned users from posting or sharing others’ personal information—including their identity, documents, financial information, or addresses—without their consent. Twitter’s Tuesday statement said the latest…
JOHANNA KONTA has announced that she will be stepping away from the sport. Former British No.1 Jo Konta has announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 30. Konta won her fourth WTA title at the Nottingham Open in June but was forced out of Wimbledon and the Olympics by Covid-19. She reached three Grand Slam singles semi-finals – including Wimbledon in 2017 – but has been dogged by a chronic knee injury in recent seasons. Konta revealed her engagement to long-term boyfriend Jackson Wade earlier this year. In a statement released today, Konta said she is “so…
The government’s green homes grant scheme underperformed badly and risks damaging future efforts to deliver net zero, the public accounts committee (PAC) said. Hailed by the prime minister, Boris Johnson, as a key plank in his green industrial revolution, the grants only upgraded about 47,500 homes out of the 600,000 originally planned. They also delivered a small fraction of the expected jobs. The grants were intended to support the public to make their homes more energy efficient and move away from fossil fuel heating by installing heat pumps and solar energy. But the PAC said the scheme unveiled in 2020…
