CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER MEETS WITH GERMAN CHANCELLOR – Politicians meet ahead of G7 Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday, at the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in the Canadian Rockies.

Merz told reporters his goals for the summit include for Iran not to develop or possess nuclear weapons, ensuring Israel’s right to defend itself, avoiding escalation of the conflict and creating room for diplomacy.

The G7 meeting started on Sunday, and Canada’s Carney, who is hosting, said his priorities are strengthening peace and security, building critical mineral supply chains and creating jobs.

A G7 official said the leaders plan to issue a joint statement on Iran calling for de-escalation.

The summit takes place in the mountain resort of Kananaskis, some 90 km (56 miles) west of Calgary. It includes the other member countries of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Diplomats said Canada has ditched the idea of a traditional comprehensive joint communique and would issue chair summaries instead, in the hope of containing a diplomatic disaster and maintaining engagement with the U.S.
